professor Henry Mintzberg has written an interesting and
thought-provoking piece about the managerial capabilities of
MBA graduates and the practical value of the case study
method.

After berating newly-minted MBA
graduates, Mintzberg tells them there is hope. His advice is
to find a "good job" and stick with it. His argument is you
can learn management if you don't job hop too much.
Mintzberg also takes a shot at
Harvard Business School and its reputation for producing
top CEOs. He claims that of the 19 great CEOs touted in
the 1990 book Inside the Harvard Business School, 10
of them performed badly and an additional 4 were
questionable at best between 1990 and 2003. To play devil's
advocate, it would have been nice to know more about the
criteria that he used. If it was company performance then,
by definition, only a small percent of companies can
outperform their peers. (Just our $0.02!)
You may not agree with all of his conclusions, but the
article is an easy read and it may help fall applicants to
further introspect upon and refine the stories they are
planning to use.
